Urgent Petition: Stop making the Philippines the dumping site of toxic waste

November 2006

One of the thrusts of the Beautiful Heart Foundation, Inc. is to gather people to unite for a common cause. Please visit this site and if you still love your country, make sure you sign. http://www.petitiononline.com/JPEPA/petition.html. The Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA), Article 29, allows the transboundary transport movement of toxic wastes and hazardous materials from Japan to the Philippines. THIS IS A BOMB THAT CAN KILL THE FILIPINOS WORST THAN THE 13-KILOTON U.S. BOMB DROPPED IN HIROSHIMA, JAPAN.  It is a violation of the inherent right of the Filipino people to live in a healthy environment and a betrayal by the government that (the JPEPA) will expose them to the health hazards from toxic wastes, hazardous materials, toxins and poisons.

This agreement is worst than war, an invasion of our precious environment, can kill people due to the effects on health from toxic wastes and hazardous materials to be imported to the Philippines from Japan.

LET'S JUNK IT! JUNK IT! If you are not living in the Philippines, your family, relatives, friends and associates are still there. Let's make sure the air we breathe around there is safe and clean, the water and soil are free of contaminants, and the environment free of toxins and poisons for fishing, farming and manufacturing industries.

Lakad Puso
February 2006

The Beautiful Heart Foundation, Inc. showed its support by participating in the Davao Chapter of Lakad Puso last February 12, 2006. Members of the BHF, Inc. and its president, Dr. Anacleto Millendez, his chief of staff, Errol Tumang and his program director, Rowynah Lucero, joined Lakad Puso and walked the 7-kilometer distance from the grounds of the Davao Medical Center in Bajada to Rizal Park in front of the City Hall of Davao. A free EKG Screening was also offered for FREE to indigent patients after the event.

Lakad Puso is an annual nationwide event that is held in major cities throughout the Philippines and under the auspices of the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) with support from the Department of Health (DOH). The walkathon delivers the message that prevention is the best medicine for cardio-vascular diseases and there is nothing cheaper than a brisk walk to exercise the heart. The Davao Provincial Chapter was organized by the cardiologists of the Davao Medical Center, the regional hospital for Region XI.

The Lakad Puso in Davao started at 5:30 AM and ended after almost an hour. Several government units participated in the event. These are the regional chapters of the Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resource, Mines and Geo-Science Bureau, PhilHealth, as well as a cooperative, the Davao Sugar Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

Upon arriving at Rizal Park, those who participated in the walkathon then had warm-ups to cool down after the long walk. A program, free snacks, free blood typing, and free heart screening were provided to those who were interested. Many of those who took part in Lakad Puso availed themselves of these freebies and enjoyed the show.
